Township government goes back to 1636 in Providence, Rhode Island. It is the oldest form of government in North America. 85 of Illinois' 102 counties have adopted township government. By law, Illinois townships are charged with three basic functions:

  1. general assistance for the indigent
  2. the assessment of real property for local taxation
  3. maintenance of roads and bridges not covered by federal, state, and other local jurisdictions
